Everything you need to protect your content

A focused backup tool — no bloat, no subscriptions, no signup. Just your channels, safely stored on your disk.

Export full channel

Save every message, every media file, the channel avatar, name, and description into a structured folder on your computer.

Import into new channel

Restore a backup into a fresh channel with one click. Messages are republished in original chronological order.

Media files

Photos, videos, documents, voice messages, GIFs — downloaded locally. Restored as native Telegram media, not as links.

Channel metadata

Name, description, and avatar image — all captured. Restore preserves the visual identity of the original channel.

FloodWait handling

Telegram rate limits are respected automatically. The app pauses, resumes, and finishes the export without manual intervention.

QR & phone login

Sign in with your Telegram mobile app via QR code, or fall back to phone number + SMS code. Sessions stored locally.

Privacy first

No servers, no telemetry, no ads. The app only talks to the official Telegram API — same as the official client.

9 interface languages

English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Turkish, Persian, Chinese. Full right-to-left support.

Open source

Every line of code is on GitHub. Audit it, build it yourself, contribute, or fork. MIT License — free forever.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about the Telegram Channel Backup Tool.

Is the backup tool really free?
Yes. Released under the MIT License — free forever, no subscriptions, no feature gates, no ads. You can also build it from source on GitHub.
Where is my data stored?
Everything stays on your computer. Channel backups are saved to a folder you choose. Session files live in ~/.tg_backup_tool/sessions/. No telemetry, no servers, no third-party analytics.
Can I back up a channel I'm just a member of?
For private channels and supergroups — you must be a member. To export messages, the app uses your own account's access. Public channels can be inspected more easily, but full message export still requires membership.
How long does a backup take?
Depends on the channel size. A 1,000-message channel with media takes 5–15 minutes. A 100,000-message channel with heavy media can take several hours. The app handles Telegram's rate limits automatically — you can leave it running.
Can I restore into the same channel?
No. Telegram doesn't allow bulk message re-upload into an existing channel. The import creates a new channel from your backup. You can then rename, migrate, or forward content as you wish.
What happens on FloodWait?
Telegram rate-limits every client. The app detects FloodWait errors and pauses for the required time, then resumes automatically. You'll see progress stall briefly — that's expected and safe.
Can I schedule periodic backups?
Not directly. The tool is manual-trigger. For automated scheduling, use your OS tools (cron on Linux, Task Scheduler on Windows) to launch the app with a command-line argument — the full guide covers this.
Which operating systems are supported?
Windows 10/11 and modern Linux distributions (Ubuntu 22.04+, similar). Prebuilt binaries are on the GitHub Releases page. There's no macOS build currently — the source code is portable and can be built on Mac if you have Python 3.10+.
Does it work with Telegram API terms?
Yes. The app uses the official Telegram API via the Telethon library — the same mechanism the official Telegram desktop client uses. It's within Telegram's terms for personal use. You remain responsible for respecting Telegram's rate limits and content policies.
Can I contribute or report bugs?
Absolutely. Visit github.com/Igor-Shelloff/tg-backup-tool. Open issues, submit pull requests, add translations (a new JSON file in app/locales/ is enough to add a language).
